For a regular adult gaming community, start Secret Santa with explicit consent and an agreed gift format. Set a spending limit, sign-up deadline and recognisable display names before drawing names. Arrange delivery separately; a shared address list is unnecessary.
Participation should have no connection to rank, group roles or tournament results. Members can decline without explaining themselves.
Agree on the boundaries
Use a nickname people already recognise, without linking a private profile. Resolve duplicate names privately. A nickname is a way to identify someone within the group, not a guarantee of anonymity.
| Decision | Write down |
|---|---|
| Participation | Explicit opt-in from adults only |
| Budget | Spending cap and whether handover costs count |
| Format | Digital, physical or a mutually acceptable mix |
| Timing | Sign-up, draw and handover window, with a time zone |
| Questions | One agreed channel for private coordination |
Choose the handover before the draw
Digital gifts can avoid sharing postal addresses. The giver checks the seller’s region restrictions, compatibility and transfer method before buying. Never ask for a password, recovery code or access to the recipient’s account.
Physical gifts suit members who freely agree to arrange receipt privately. Share an address or phone number only with the person who needs it, through an agreed channel. A mixed exchange works only if everyone has an acceptable option.
A workable sequence
- Post the rules and collect explicit replies. Silence is not consent.
- Check that participants can distinguish the chosen display names.
- Collect brief preferences and unwanted categories without purchase histories or account details.
- Confirm the final group and format before drawing.
- Share the handover window. Discuss delays privately.
- Invite optional reactions afterwards; purchase receipts and chat screenshots are not required evidence.
An example to adapt
> This exchange is for willing adult members of our regular group. Sign up by 5 December, 20:00 Moscow time. In this example, the cap is 1,000 roubles, gifts are digital and handover runs from 20 to 25 December. These are group rules, not a service price. Share preferences without account names or contact details. You may withdraw before the draw without giving a reason.
For a physical exchange, replace the format and agree on costs separately. Do not publish real names, addresses, phone numbers, private usernames, invitation links or server identifiers.
Coordinate it yourself or use Osanta
A trusted coordinator can draw names and tell each participant privately. Agree beforehand that this coordinator will see the assignments. An open table of pairs would spoil the surprise.
The public Osanta game page describes a start form with the organiser’s email, followed by game name, draw date and budget. Participants receive one link; assignments are emailed on the draw date. Participants do not need a separate account. Using email is different from a nickname-only exchange, so do not promise complete anonymity.
This is a standalone draw, without a claimed gaming-platform integration or delivery service. If members do not want to use email, agree on a suitable alternative first. An in-person group can consult the board game club scenario; workplace coordination has its own remote team guide.
Final check
- Every adult has opted in.
- Display names are clear without a public identity directory.
- Budget and handover costs are understood.
- Everyone accepts the gift format.
- Deadlines include a time zone.
- No passwords, recovery codes or private invitations are requested.
- Delays have a private contact route.

Questions on this topic
Can members use nicknames?
Use familiar nicknames in group messages. This does not guarantee anonymity: Osanta’s public page describes participation through a form and assignment emails. Do not post email addresses in the group.
Must gifts be physical?
No. Agree on digital gifts before sign-up if preferred. The giver checks region, compatibility and purchase conditions with the seller.
Do we need a shared address list?
No. Digital gifts do not require postal addresses. For physical gifts, agree privately on the details needed for handover.
Does this connect to a gaming platform?
This plan uses a separate draw by link. It assumes no platform integration, delivery service or account access.
What if someone changes their mind?
Confirm the final group before the draw. Afterwards, discuss the situation privately with the organiser without promising automatic reassignment.
